Waste Community Accelerator I - Pitching Event 2020

The Ocean Plastic Prevention Accelerator held a pitching event on August 6 to conclude the inaugural cohort of its Waste Community Accelerator programme. The event was held virtually and received widespread attention. Guests included representatives of Waste4change, Angel Investment Network Indonesia, Instellar, Circulate Capital, Reciki, Netherlands Business Support Office Surabaya, Patamar Capital, Coca Cola Indonesia, the Swiss Embassy, and Wahana Visi Indonesia.

The pitching event was initiated with a keynote from from Matteo Chiampo, the Technical Director of The Incubation Network who shared advice on how to obtain financial support from investors. Subsequently, a panel discussion on investment in waste management was held. The panelists included Valencia Dea of Circulate Capital, Cita Melissa of IDX Incubator Jawa Timur (Incubation initiative of the Indonesian Stock Exchange), and Dea Jessica of Siklus Refill. The panelists agreed that it is positive if profit-oriented ventures tackle the issue of plastic pollution and that more such organisations are urgently needed.

The main part of the event were the pitches of Waste Community Accelerator participants. They demonstrated the diversity of their approaches to waste management and the complexity of the field. The planned initiatives of all organisations showed a great variety of ways to address plastic and other waste pollution and collectively created a hopeful message for the future of waste management in Surabaya. All presentations and the recording of the event are publicly available. Before the conclusion of the event, guests had an opportunity to engage more deeply with the pitching organisations in dedicated breakout rooms. Discussions were very lively and pointed towards a wide range of future collaboration opportunities.

The season has changed, but the spirit will last forever. It was very interesting nine months journey with the first accelerator cohort. This is a remarkable moment for OPPA team. We wish a fruitful journey ahead for all the participants. May our relationship last and create more collaboration opportunities in the future.
